This course offers a foundation for understanding communication from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The goal is for the learner to become a strong and confident communicator inside and outside the classroom. Insights into what strong communication looks like, pitfalls of poor communication, ways to improve and adapt communication, and application to real-world scenarios are presented.

Communication for the Professional Educator is the first of three modules in this three-credit course.

This course is 15 hours resulting in one (1) non-matriculating graduate course credit provided by Southern New Hampshire University.

Rationale/Course Significance:

Communication is an integral skill in all professional fields, and the job of a professional educator requires specific communication skills across various modalities and with various stakeholders, including students, parents, colleagues, and school leadership. Professional educators with strength in communication are more successful in their jobs and have the potential for future job growth.

Course Description:

This course offers a foundation in understanding communication from both a theoretical and practical perspective. The goal is for the learner to become a strong and confident communicator inside and outside the classroom. Insights into what strong communication looks like, pitfalls of poor communication, ways to improve and adapt communication, and application to real-world scenarios are presented.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand and articulate different forms of communication
  2. Identify the importance of word choice and the possible outcomes from choosing different phrasing and explanations
  3. Examine, describe and apply communication styles to specific education-related scenarios
  4. Describe effective communication styles versus ineffective ones and correct errors in given communication scenarios
  5. Identify personal communication style and reflect on personal communication successes and challenges from the perspective of an educator
